I managed to get a copy of this book authored by Gill Saunders the other day. It is a companion text to an exhibition by the same name, held at The Whitworth Museum in Manchester UK. I've been dipping into it when I have the chance.
From the Director's Foreward
"The wallpaper collection at the Whitworth is one of our unusual treasures. That there should be a wallpaper collection, and for that matter a world textile collection, within what otherwise might appear to be a fine art institution is testament to the Whitworth founders and to our Manchester location. "
On the exhibition
"[It] makes an exuberant argument for the destabilising impact of this usually domestic medium in the hands of artists and designers who generally live in a fine art world. By misbehaving as art object and domestic decoration the works in this show expose themselves and critique the social and cultural mores of the society within which they are produced. Seriously playful, as the essays in this publication demonstrate, these wallpapers seduce and challenge in equal measure."
