77 - Varnish - A Sticking Point

77 - Varnish - A Sticking Point

Fumes, gunge and adult-proof packaging make solvent based varnish awkward. But I couldn't use a water based varnish, as it would dissolve the water colour paint.

The Golden Gloss varnish was so hard to open I had to turn it upside down and open it with a tin opener: the kitchen one, which then needed cleaning.

I had to grub about in the recycling box to source a jar and then the brush wouldn't fit in the jar. The white spirit (solvent needed to clean the brush, tins, jars and bottle tops that got sticky) was in rusty box at the back of the shed. No work flow - work stutter. Gluey paper towels stuck to the washing up gloves. Ergh.

On the upside it wasn't too windy so there were no insects or wind borne pollen trapped in the wet varnish. I mixed gloss with matte and it worked really well. The special brush I bought was very effective with no shedding of bristles. The varnish is not at all visible now the pictures are dry.

Pictures protected from finger marks and UV rays.

A good result.

Absolutely brilliant post, Frankie. The drawings are wonderful, too.

Macmillan Cancer Support

This year I challenged myself to write one blog post per day, for 365 days. The project began on 3 March 2025.

I have linked this challenge to a charity fundraiser, because I want to look outside as well as inwards and contribute to society. It also holds me accountable and adds motivation to write everyday.

Macmillan is an organistation that offers powerful help to anyone (in the UK) who has been affected by cancer.
