Update Sunday 7 June
I've been reading so many posts online about people struggling to get work, especially young people with less experience. So just in case a frustrated job hunter stumbles across this post, I wanted to update with the result.
I received a personal reply from the CEO! She said that she really liked my innovative approach to the job application (which was my post below).
I didn't get shortlisted however, as the company were looking for people with a slick, commercial show reel. And probably not an artist on the side 👀 However, I feel her reply was a success for me and I found it encouraging. I was being myself and using my creative skills and I researched the company and thought carefully about how I might be of use to them.
Perhaps if I wanted to take this career angle forward I could offer my services as an intern. You have to think in a nimble way!
I have kept my options open about directions I can take. I think about what makes me happy and moving (not necessarily forward but mobile), rather than being rigid about the way my life should or shouldn't look.
It's an extreme financial challenge being an artist. The average income for an artist in the UK was £12,500 a year in 2024.
So you have to be nimble!
I have some plans I'm working on...
Original Post
I've been catching up with some job searching this week, and wow, the commercial world is changing fast! Corporate fashion is advertising for change managers to implement AI efficiency drives. Bots are generating fake jobs that request sample work to apply and snare job seekers by harvesting their submissions to train AI. Yikes.
Tech for Good - thelittleloop
But some companies are harnessing tech for good. Charlotte Morley started thelittleloop in 2020. It's an online solution that breaks the line of over production and wastage of children's clothes and turns it into a circular fashion loop of pre-loved delights. Customers subscribe to borrow clothes at a fraction of the RRP. When they've finished with the clothes, they are returned and customers don't have to bother with all the nitty gritty of listing, selling or dropping things off at charity shops.
Charlotte braved the gnashing teeth of Dragon's Den and won a record breaking investment for her company. Brave and impressive!
Videographer
I discovered littleloop because they are advertising for a videographer, so I decided to be a little innovative and write this blog post as part of my application. Shopify blog posts are a great way to share YouTube videos and here are a few I've made in the past.
Trend
The most popular short video I've ever published (45,000 views) taps (ha ha) into an online trend called ASMR. This is a fun way to relax by watching and listening to soothing sounds and visuals.
So I know it's not all about view counts: for a commercial company sales conversions and subscriptions are where it's at.
Being a goal oriented person, I am confident I can harness creative skill to convert.
Meanwhile, let's chill and count taps.
How To
People love finding out how to do things!
I do have a popular video that teaches a very niche group of people how to make miniature tights. But perhaps a little boring if you're not into vintage fashion dolls.
This one shows my approach to informal presentation, neatly made:
POV
Point of view - people love looking over your shoulder. It's a sort of 'sneak peak' vibe.
FOMO
Missed an event? It really doesn't matter these days - there's live video to tune into and catch ups.
This is a short I made whilst working with Scrace Architects at their IGNITE crafts event.
Double Up
One of the best ways of using social media is repurposing content and killing two birds with one stone.
Efficiency and creativity in one 😋
I now have a blog post published, and a job application completed.
Cartoons
I can also make cartoons.
